Using Insurance for Therapy at Therapeutic Links

Mental health services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance or employee benefits plan. Coverage varies depending on your specific plan.

We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm:

  • Co-pays or coinsurance

  • Deductible status

  • Session limits

  • In-network vs. out-of-network benefits

Have a High Deductible?
You Still Have Coverage Options

If you have a high-deductible health plan, you can still use your benefits to pay for therapy.

Many clients use:

  • HSA (Health Savings Account)

  • FSA (Flexible Spending Account)

These funds can typically be used for therapy services, even before your deductible is met.

This allows you to access care now, rather than delaying support.

Questions to Ask Your Insurance Provider

Please check your coverage carefully by asking your insurance provider the following questions:

  • What is my co-pay?

  • Do I have mental health insurance benefits?

  • What is my deductible and has it been met?

  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?

  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?

  • Is approval required from my primary care physician or managed care company

  • Will my insurance pay for services provided by an out-of-network provider?

Insurance & Payment FAQs

Does insurance cover therapy?

Most health insurance plans offer some level of coverage for therapy. Coverage depends on your specific plan, including your deductible, co-pay, and whether your provider is in-network or out-of-network.

Can I use my insurance even if you are not in-network?

Yes. Many clients use their out-of-network benefits to receive reimbursement for therapy services.

We work with many plans from providers like UnitedHealthcare and Aetna, and can help guide you through the process.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy varies based on your plan. Some clients only pay a co-pay, while others pay the full session fee until their deductible is met.

Many out-of-network plans reimburse 40–80% of the session cost after the deductible.

Can I use HSA or FSA for therapy?

Yes. Most HSA (Health Savings Accounts) and FSA (Flexible Spending Accounts) can be used to pay for therapy services, including sessions applied toward your deductible.

Do I have to meet my deductible before insurance covers therapy?

If you have a high-deductible plan, you may need to pay the full session fee until your deductible is met. After that, your insurance may begin covering a portion of the cost.

How quickly can I start therapy?

In many cases, clients are able to begin therapy within 7 days, depending on availability and scheduling preferences.

Do you offer therapy in person or online?

Yes. We offer:

  • In-person therapy in Dupont Circle, Washington, DC

  • Online therapy across DC, Maryland, and Virginia

Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining the expected cost of your care.

Under federal law, providers must offer an estimate to clients who:

  • Do not have insurance, or

  • Choose not to use their insurance

This helps you understand costs in advance and make informed decisions about your care.

Cancellation Policy

We reserve time specifically for each client to ensure consistent and accessible care.

If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please contact your therapist directly at least 24 hours in advance.

If an appointment is canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice or missed, that time cannot always be offered to another client in need.

  • Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance

  • Late cancellations and no-shows are charged the full session fee

  • Insurance does not cover missed or late-canceled sessions

A valid card on file (credit, debit, or HSA/FSA card) is required to secure your appointment time and allow for a seamless scheduling and billing process, so you don’t have to manage payments after each session.

The card on file will be charged for cancellations within 24 hours and missed appointments.
